A prayer shawl, or tallit, is a sacred garment with fringes, or tzitzit. Those fringes were commanded in Numbers 15:38–39 as a reminder of the Law, “to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord.” The Hebrew embroidery features the traditional benediction recited before donning the tallit:, “Blessed are You, O Lord, our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us by Your commandments, and has commanded us to wrap ourselves in the fringed garment.”
